Heza Dun Smoke
1999 - AQHA - 3794276 - Grullo - Stallion
Genes; E/e, a/a, N/Cr, D/d
Heza Dun Smoke, [Smoky] is a silver grullo stallion with the cream gene & is registered in AQHA 3794276, NFQHA F0015069, & IBHA T20689. He is also an APHA approved breeding stallion. As far as dun factor goes he has just about all of them [Dorsal Stripe, Ear tips & edging, Shoulder shadow, Leg barring, Face mask, cobwebbing, and Guard hairs. He stands an honest 15.1 hands tall & weighs 1200 lbs. He has not been shown; he is my trail riding horse. We trail ride mostly in Southern, IL. at the Shawnee National Forest. He rides with mares and geldings. Smoky is real light on the bit. I ride him with a colt snaffle. He has a smooth ride and carries his head level or lower & is all business. We are usually the leader. He makes a good leader & never refuses to go over or through anything I point him at. Smoky has a lot of cow in him & seems to pass that on to his offspring's. He has a lot of athletic abilities, is very versatile, and has a great mind.
Smoky's sire [Tacoma Smoke] is a 1983 model and has only produced duns & grullos. Tacoma Smoke is UC Davis tested homozygous for the black gene & his sire record proves he is homozygous for the dun gene too. He stood at stud in Oregon and Ohio for a few years.
I think Smoky's dun gene plus the cream gives him a better chance of siring diluted colored foals verses just the dun gene. With just the dun gene you have a 50% chance of diluted color. With the dun & cream gene you have a 75% chance of diluted colored offspring. Also, 96% of his foals have been dun & he has sired a black gened homozygous foal. His oldest foals were 2 year olds in 2005.
We hand breed Smoky to the mares. He shows good manners and listens well to the handler. He never leaves a scratch on the mares when breeding. He also has mares in the pasture with him.
There are 5 Foundation Registries that I know of. Heza Dun Smoke is 100% foundation in all but one. In the NFQHA he is registered at 91%. NFQHA is the most stringent for calculating percentages of blood in reference to foundation breeding.
